IPL targets color. The source of that color matters.

IPL sends a range of light wavelengths into the skin. Melanin in a selected benign pigmented spot and hemoglobin in a visible vessel absorb chosen light energy, which becomes heat.

The treated pigment or vessel can darken or change appearance before the body gradually clears it. Changing, bleeding, suspicious, or undiagnosed spots need medical evaluation instead of cosmetic treatment.

What Lumecca Peak may target.

A consultation confirms that the concern is appropriate for cosmetic light treatment and that your skin can be treated safely.

Benign pigmented spots

Selected freckles, dyschromia, and hyperpigmentation may respond after an in-person assessment.

Facial redness

Selected rosacea-associated redness and small visible vessels may be appropriate for IPL settings.

Reasons to wait

An active tan, recent sun, self-tanner, infection, active inflammatory flare, or photosensitizing product can change the timing or treatment choice.

Darkening before fading can be part of the process.

Little interruption for many clients does not mean no visible response.

Before

Sun history and products are reviewed.

Avoid tanning and significant sun exposure, and disclose every medication, supplement, topical, recent procedure, and history of cold sores.

During

Settings follow the target and skin.

The handpiece delivers controlled pulses of broad-spectrum light. A laser uses a specific wavelength, so IPL and laser are not interchangeable terms.

After

Pigment and vessels may look more visible first.

Temporary redness, warmth, tenderness, swelling, darkening, blanching, or bruising can occur before the area gradually changes.

Protect the response instead of rushing it.

Pigmented spots may develop a darker, coffee-ground appearance before shedding. Small vessels may darken, blanch, or bruise before fading.

First 24 to 48 hours

Avoid excessive heat, hot tubs, saunas, and strenuous exercise. Use a gentle routine and do not aggressively treat visible darkening.

Following days

Pause irritating retinoids and exfoliants as directed. Do not pick, scratch, or scrub treated pigment.

Ongoing

Use broad-spectrum SPF and deliberate sun protection. Multiple treatments may be needed, and results vary.

More melanin in surrounding skin can increase pigment-change risk. youth.o.logy may recommend pretreatment, adjusted settings, another option, or postponement after an in-person assessment.

IPL questions, answered plainly.

Is IPL the same as a laser?

No. A laser uses a specific wavelength, while IPL uses a range of wavelengths. The right technology depends on what is creating the visible color.

What can Lumecca Peak IPL treat?

Its cleared uses include specified benign pigmented lesions and selected benign vascular concerns. A consultation matters because not every brown or red spot should be treated cosmetically.

Why can dark spots look worse right after IPL?

Targeted pigment often darkens first and may develop a coffee-ground appearance before gradually shedding. Do not pick or scrub it away.

Is IPL appropriate for darker skin tones?

Sometimes, but not automatically. More melanin in surrounding skin can increase the risk of unwanted lightening or darkening, so assessment and careful settings matter.

How many IPL sessions will I need?

There is no responsible universal number. The concern, depth, skin, response, and amount of change you want all affect the plan.

What should I do before an IPL appointment?

Avoid tanning and significant sun exposure, and disclose every medication, supplement, topical, and recent procedure. Do not stop a prescribed medication unless the prescribing clinician directs you.

A brown or red spot needs assessment before it needs a device.

We will look at the concern, your skin, recent sun exposure, and medical history before recommending IPL or another option.
